Employment Contract

An agreement whereby an employee undertakes to perform work in the service of an employer against payment of wages.

An employment contract is the basis of every employment relationship in the Netherlands. According to Article 7:610 of the Dutch Civil Code (BW), there is an employment contract if the employee undertakes to perform work in the service of the employer for remuneration during a certain period of time. The agreement may be entered into in writing or orally and for a definite or indefinite period of time. In the case of an employment contract for a definite period, the contract ends automatically after the agreed period, unless extended.

The employment contract is entered into for a fixed term or for an indefinite period.
